WHAT WE DO
Services & Capabilities
We transform how the AEC industry coordinates data, proves outcomes, and builds sustainably. For twenty years, we've researched computational design, blockchain integration, and digital coordination systems. That research now powers practical implementations.
SERVICE
Digital Twin Integration
Unifying design, construction, and operational data through Web3-enabled digital twins.
The Challenge
Construction projects generate fragmented data across disconnected systems — BIM models, project management platforms, IoT sensors, financial software. This fragmentation costs the industry £54 billion annually in rework, delays, and lost insights.
Our Approach
We design and implement digital twin architectures that create unified, queryable representations of built assets throughout their lifecycle. Our twins integrate:
- Building Information Models (BIM/IFC)
- Real-time IoT sensor data
- Satellite and geospatial information
- Blockchain verification layers
- Operational and maintenance systems
Research-Validated Frameworks
Our methodology draws from published research in computational design and graph database theory, not vendor marketing.
Open Standards
We build on IFC, LBD (Linked Building Data), and open ontologies — no vendor lock-in.
Verifiable Provenance
Blockchain integration ensures every data point has cryptographically-verified history.
Outcomes
Ideal For
- Large infrastructure projects requiring multi-party coordination
- Retrofit programmes needing verified carbon savings
- Asset operators seeking integrated facility management
- Organisations pursuing digital transformation strategies
SERVICE
Blockchain for Construction
Smart contracts and decentralised protocols that automate verification, enforce transparency, and enable circular material tracking.
The Challenge
Construction supply chains lack transparency. Material origins are unverifiable, carbon calculations are disputed, payments require manual reconciliation, and circular reuse systems can't scale without trusted provenance.
Material Passports
Blockchain-verified histories of materials from manufacturing through demolition.
Supply Chain Transparency
Traceable provenance for sustainability certification.
Smart Contracts
Automated payment on verified milestone completion.
Circular Economy Infrastructure
Reuse marketplaces with trusted material data.
Authority in This Space
We literally wrote the book: "Blockchain for Construction" (Springer, 2022) synthesizes five years of research and pilot implementations. Our work contributes to international standards development and has secured competitive research funding from Scottish Government and European programmes.
Outcomes
Ideal For
- Material suppliers seeking differentiation through verified sustainability
- Contractors managing complex supply chains
- Circular economy initiatives requiring scalable trust infrastructure
- Organisations facing ESG reporting requirements

FREQUENTLY ASKED
Common Questions
What is a digital twin in construction?
A digital twin in construction is a dynamic, data-rich virtual representation of a physical built asset — a building, bridge, or infrastructure system. Unlike a static BIM model, a digital twin continuously integrates real-time data from IoT sensors, satellite imagery, maintenance systems, and operational records. This creates a "living" model that reflects the asset's actual state across its lifecycle, enabling predictive maintenance, automated compliance verification, and data-driven decision making. Our digital twins also incorporate blockchain verification layers for cryptographic provenance of every data point.
How is blockchain used in construction?
Blockchain provides a transparent, immutable ledger for construction data. Key applications include: material passports that track materials from manufacture through demolition with verified provenance; smart contracts that automate payment release when verified milestones are completed; supply chain transparency for sustainability certification and ESG reporting; and circular economy infrastructure enabling trusted reuse marketplaces. Our TRACE project, funded by the Scottish Government, demonstrates these capabilities in a live pilot connecting demolition contractors, reuse hubs, and builders.
What does an AI readiness assessment involve?
Our AI Readiness Assessment is a structured two-week engagement that evaluates your organisation across six dimensions: Data Infrastructure, Process Maturity, Technical Capability, Governance Frameworks, Use Case Viability, and Organisational Readiness. Week one involves stakeholder interviews, software ecosystem mapping, data flow analysis, and process documentation review. Week two delivers an AI Readiness Score, a priority roadmap with quick wins and strategic initiatives, ROI projections, and a 90-minute strategy session. Unlike generic IT assessments, ours is built specifically for AEC workflows and data structures.
What industries do you serve?
We specialise in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry and its adjacent sectors. This includes architectural practices, structural and MEP engineering firms, general contractors and specialist subcontractors, property developers and asset owners, facility management organisations, material suppliers, and public sector bodies involved in construction policy and standards. Our deep domain expertise in AEC workflows, data standards (IFC, LBD), and industry-specific challenges distinguishes us from generalist technology consultancies.
How do you bridge academic research and industry practice?
Our founder, Dr Theo Dounas, maintains active academic positions while running Adventurous Systems. This dual positioning means our industry implementations are grounded in peer-reviewed research (including 18+ publications and the Springer book "Blockchain for Construction"), while our academic work is informed by real implementation challenges. We serve as elected Secretary of the European Council for Computing in Construction (EC3), contributing to international standards. This research-to-practice pipeline ensures clients receive solutions validated through both academic rigour and practical deployment.
